The best SAP certification for a sales and order-to-cash career

Sales careers on SAP split into order-to-cash, CRM, and presales seats. Here's which certification fits each seat, and how to move between them.

The best SAP certification for a sales and order-to-cash career

For an S/4HANA order-to-cash role, start with C_TS462 if your project runs private edition or on-premise, or C_S4CS if it runs Public Edition. If you configure the CRM front office instead, C_C4H47 (Sales Cloud Version 2) fits. C_BCSCX suits sales and presales people who position SAP Customer Experience solutions rather than configure them.

"Which SAP® certification should I take for a sales career?" has no single answer, because "sales" on SAP is at least three different jobs. One person configures how an order turns into a delivery and an invoice. Another configures the CRM a sales team lives in all day. A third never configures anything and instead explains to a buyer why the software is worth it. Each seat has its own credential, so this guide starts with the seat and lets the exam follow. For the wider question of whether certification is worth it at all, see our career guide to choosing an SAP certification.

The four credentials covered here are all published in SAP Learning's certification catalogue. Three are System-Based Assessments (SyBA), where you perform tasks in a live system; one is a Scenario-Based Assessment (SBA), where you reason through a business situation. That split tracks the seat almost exactly: the people who configure are tested by configuring.

If you want to feel that difference before reading further, a free sample shows what a performance-based task looks like in practice. Try a free sample and come back with a better sense of which format suits you.

Key takeaways

  • Pick the seat first. Order-to-cash configuration, CRM configuration and solution positioning are different jobs with different certifications.
  • The order-to-cash consultant has two options, split by edition: C_TS462 for private edition and on-premise, C_S4CS for Public Edition.
  • The CRM consultant's credential is C_C4H47, for SAP Sales Cloud Version 2.
  • Sales and presales people who do not configure systems look at C_BCSCX, a scenario-based positioning exam.
  • The seats connect. Careers often start on one rung and add a second, and the combination is worth more than either alone.

Which SAP sales certification fits which seat?

If you already know your seat, this table points straight at the match. Details for each exam are on its SAP Learning page and on our exam hubs:

What does a sales career on SAP actually look like?

Think of the customer relationship as a line. At the left end, a prospect is identified, qualified and courted: leads, opportunities, quotes, visits. In the middle, the deal becomes an order the business has to fulfil: availability is checked, goods are delivered, an invoice goes out and the revenue lands in finance. Around the whole line sits the question of why a customer should buy SAP software for any of this in the first place.

Those three zones map to three career seats:

  • The order-to-cash consultant. Configures the ERP side: sales document types, item categories, master data, availability checks, shipping, billing and pricing in S/4HANA. This is what most people still call an SD consultant.
  • The CRM consultant. Configures the front office the sales team uses day to day: how leads and opportunities move, what a seller sees on a visit, how a manager tracks the pipeline. The system is SAP Sales Cloud rather than S/4HANA.
  • The presales and positioning seat. Works with buyers rather than systems: mapping a prospect's growth problems to SAP Customer Experience products and explaining the value. Account executives, solution advisors and presales consultants sit here.

None of these is the "senior" version of another. They are parallel seats that happen to touch the same customer, which is why people move between them more easily than the exam codes suggest.

The order-to-cash consultant: C_TS462 or C_S4CS?

This is the rung most people mean when they ask about an SAP sales certification, and it has a genuine fork. Both exams certify an implementation consultant for S/4HANA Sales working in a mentored project role. What differs is the edition of S/4HANA, and the edition changes the shape of the job.

What does C_TS462 cover?

C_TS462 is the Sales consultant credential for S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, and SAP notes it also applies to on-premise S/4HANA. SAP positions it as an entry-level credential. Its learning journey is the classic sales and distribution curriculum: running an end-to-end order-to-cash flow and seeing how billing hands off to finance, then configuring the pieces behind it. That means the enterprise structure for sales, business partner and customer master data, sales document types and item categories, outline agreements, incompletion rules, output and text control, delivery scheduling and the availability check, delivery processing, billing, and pricing (SAP, the private-edition Sales learning journey). The journey closes with material on the RISE with SAP methodology and on implementing the private edition, so the exam assumes some awareness of how these projects are run, not only how the screens are set.

The private-edition and on-premise world is where configuration depth is most valued. Customers here often have long-established, heavily tailored sales processes, and the consultant's job is to make the system model them correctly. If you are deciding between this and the procurement track, our SAP MM vs SD certification comparison covers that choice in detail.

What does C_S4CS cover?

C_S4CS certifies an implementation consultant on S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition with a focus on Sales. The difference shows up in its first course: before any sales content, it covers the Public Edition implementation approach itself, including building the team, system landscapes, fit-to-standard workshops, configuring processes, integrations, data migration and testing. The sales courses then work through scope items rather than raw configuration: selling from stock, quotations, free-of-charge deliveries, third-party sales, intercompany sales, returns and complaints, credit and debit memos, contracts, rebates, down payments, and collective billing. A later course adds AI-assisted sales order entry, sales planning and analytics.

The Public Edition job leans more toward fitting a business to standard processes than toward building custom ones. A consultant here spends more time in workshops explaining what the standard does and helping a customer adopt it. That suits people who enjoy process design and stakeholder conversations as much as configuration.

How do you choose between them?

  • Your employer or clients run private edition or on-premise → C_TS462.
  • Your projects are Public Edition implementations → C_S4CS.
  • You are switching in and have no project yet → look at job adverts in your market and see which edition they name. The underlying order-to-cash knowledge carries across both, so the first one you earn is not wasted if you later need the other.

Whichever you pick, expect interviewers to probe the process rather than the certificate. Our SAP SD interview questions guide shows the kind of order-to-cash reasoning hiring managers look for.

The CRM consultant: what does C_C4H47 prove?

If your work is the sales team's front office rather than the ERP back office, the credential is C_C4H47, the implementation-consultant certification for SAP Sales Cloud Version 2. It verifies fundamentals and administration knowledge for a consultant working in a mentored project role (SAP, SAP Learning certification page).

Its learning journey is built around people's days. The first course walks through what a sales representative and a sales manager actually do in the system, along with machine-learning and generative-AI basics, Microsoft Teams integration, relationship intelligence and the mobile app. The second course flips to the administrator's view: setting up leads, opportunities, visits, quotes and sales orders, setting up sales workflows, and configuring the AI features and the mobile app.

That focus tells you who the seat suits. A CRM consultant spends less time on pricing procedures and delivery rules and more time on how a seller qualifies a lead, what a manager needs on a pipeline view, and how to make the tool something the team will actually use. People from sales operations or CRM administration backgrounds often find this a natural first step. We compare Sales Cloud with the other Customer Experience products, product by product, in SAP Customer Experience certifications compared, so we will not repeat that here.

The presales seat: where does C_BCSCX fit?

C_BCSCX is a different kind of credential. Its listed roles are sales and presales, SAP pitches it at entry level, and what it certifies is the ability to explain where SAP Customer Experience products fit in the wider Business Suite, not the ability to configure them. The skills it names are competitive positioning, customer value propositions and customer relationship management (SAP, Positioning SAP Customer Experience Solutions).

The learning journey is framed around the chief revenue officer: what growth leaders are trying to achieve, how SAP CX products connect to end-to-end processes, how pairing CX with the wider SAP portfolio adds value, and where business AI fits into customer experience. It uses worked customer stories to practise linking a business challenge to a solution.

Because it is a Scenario-Based Assessment, the exam asks you to reason through a situation rather than complete system tasks. That makes it the natural credential for account executives, solution advisors and presales consultants. It is also a useful second credential for a configuring consultant who wants to move toward client-facing roles, since it trains the vocabulary buyers use.

How do the sales seats connect over a career?

Because the three seats sit on the same customer line, the most common career moves are sideways steps that widen a profile, not climbs up a single ladder:

  • Order-to-cash to CRM. An S/4HANA Sales consultant already understands what happens after a deal closes. Adding Sales Cloud makes you the person who can talk about both halves of the line, which matters on projects where the front office and back office have to agree.
  • Either configuring seat to presales. Consultants who have delivered projects make credible presales people, because they can say what a system really does. C_BCSCX gives that move a formal anchor.
  • Private edition to Public Edition, or the reverse. Some consultants go on to hold both S/4HANA Sales credentials when their clients run both editions.
  • Toward lead and architect roles. Seniority comes from delivery: projects completed, problems solved, teams led. Certifications open doors at each step, but the track record is what moves you up.

The same logic is in our finance career guide: the first credential matches the work you do now, and later ones extend it.

What about billing and subscription monetisation?

Billing appears in every order-to-cash curriculum, so it is easy to assume the billing and monetisation certifications belong on this ladder too. They are better treated as a neighbouring career. Subscription billing, usage-based charging and service-to-cash processes are a specialism with their own products and their own certification line. If that is where your interest lies, start with our guide to SAP service and monetization certifications. For the classic sales seat, the billing you need is already inside C_TS462 and C_S4CS.

How does the exam format change your preparation?

The format split gives you a practical rule for preparing. For the three System-Based Assessments, C_TS462, C_S4CS and C_C4H47, the exam is a set of tasks in a live system. Reading about item categories or opportunity workflows is not enough; you need to have set them up and seen what breaks when one setting is wrong. Run a full order-to-cash cycle, or a full lead-to-quote cycle, until the sequence is automatic, then practise under time pressure.

For the Scenario-Based C_BCSCX, the skill is judgement. Practise taking a business problem, naming the relevant product and stating the value in the buyer's terms. Our guide to the performance-based exam formats covers the technique for both.

One warning applies to every exam here. Practice material and interview preparation are training tools, not SAP certification content, and anyone offering "dumps" or leaked questions is selling something you should not trust or use. Performance-based exams reward the skill itself, which is the only preparation that lasts into the job.

So which SAP sales certification is best for you?

  • You configure order-to-cash on private edition or on-premise S/4HANA → C_TS462.
  • You configure order-to-cash on Public Edition → C_S4CS.
  • You configure the CRM front office on Sales Cloud → C_C4H47.
  • You sell or position SAP solutions to buyers → C_BCSCX.
  • You are switching in and unsure → every S/4HANA implementation has to sell, ship and invoice, so an S/4HANA Sales credential matched to your target edition is a sensible first step.

Whichever row is yours, the next move is the same: get hands-on with the tasks the exam covers. Start with a free sample to feel the format, then open the exam hub for the credential you chose for its scenarios, skill drills and current exam details.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best SAP certification for a sales career?
It depends on the sales seat you hold. Consultants who configure the S/4HANA order-to-cash process take C_TS462 (private edition or on-premise) or C_S4CS (Public Edition). Consultants who configure the CRM front office take C_C4H47 for Sales Cloud Version 2. Sales and presales people who position SAP solutions to buyers look at C_BCSCX instead.
Is C_TS462 the same as the SAP SD certification?
In everyday usage, yes. People still say SD for the sales and distribution area, and C_TS462 is the S/4HANA Sales implementation-consultant certification that covers it: sales document types and item categories, master data, availability checks, delivery processing, billing and pricing. It applies to S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition and on-premise, and is positioned as an entry-level qualification.
Should I take C_TS462 or C_S4CS?
Choose by the edition your projects run. C_TS462 targets private edition and on-premise S/4HANA, where classic sales configuration is the core skill. C_S4CS targets S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and adds the cloud implementation approach, such as fit-to-standard workshops, to the sales processes. If you are unsure, look at the systems your employer or target clients actually run.
Is C_C4H47 a CRM certification or an ERP certification?
C_C4H47 is a CRM certification. It covers SAP Sales Cloud Version 2: the sales representative's and sales manager's daily workflows, leads, opportunities, quotes, sales orders and visits, plus administration, machine-learning features and the mobile app. It does not test S/4HANA order-to-cash configuration, which is what C_TS462 and C_S4CS cover on the ERP side.
Which SAP certification suits a presales or account executive role?
C_BCSCX is built for that seat. Its listed roles are sales and presales, and its learning journey teaches how to place SAP CX products in the context of the wider Business Suite: linking them to a revenue leader's challenges and articulating value. It is a Scenario-Based Assessment, so it tests judgement about positioning rather than hands-on system configuration.
Do I need sales experience before an SAP sales certification?
Not formally, but it helps. The implementation-consultant exams assume you understand how a business sells, ships and invoices, because the tasks are framed around those processes. Someone who has worked in order management, customer service or sales operations already knows the business flow and mainly needs to learn how the system models it. Career switchers should learn both together.
Can I move from an SD role into Sales Cloud or presales later?
Yes, and it is a common direction. An order-to-cash consultant already understands what happens after a deal closes, which makes CRM front-office work easier to learn, and a consultant who understands both systems is well placed to explain value to buyers. Adding C_C4H47 or C_BCSCX after an S/4HANA Sales credential widens the profile rather than restarting it.
Are interview questions or practice questions the real certification exam?
No. Interview questions are what employers ask about your project experience, and practice material is written to train the skills an exam covers. Neither is SAP certification exam content, and nobody legitimate sells real exam questions. Prepare by rehearsing tasks in a system for the three system-based sales exams, and by reasoning through positioning scenarios for the scenario-based C_BCSCX.
