SAP Certified - Backend Developer - ABAP Cloud (Beta Version)

Who it's for: ABAP developers and technical consultants — plus experienced programmers moving into modern, cloud-ready SAP development — who want a recognized associate credential proving they can build robust business applications with ABAP, the RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and Clean Core extensibility as a mentored contributor on an implementation project team.

The SAP® C_ABAPD certification confirms that a developer can build reliable business applications on modern, cloud-ready ABAP rather than simply recognizing syntax. Its scope runs from language fundamentals — data objects, control logic, internal tables, and object-oriented design — through database access with ABAP SQL and Core Data Services, into building transactional apps with the RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and out to Clean Core extensibility for SAP S/4HANA Cloud. It also expects working familiarity with Joule, SAP's generative-AI coding assistant, for generating, explaining, and tuning code. Delivered as a System-Based Assessment, it rewards hands-on execution in a live development environment at an entry-level, mentored-contributor depth. Note that the exam is currently offered as a Beta Version.

1. 1Treat the ABAP language and object-oriented fundamentals as the foundation everything else stands on — practise data objects, internal tables, classes, interfaces, and exception handling until they are second nature before layering on data modeling and RAP.
2. 2Build CDS data models hands-on: define Dictionary objects, then create views with associations, annotations, and code pushdown, so you understand how one modeling decision ripples through services and the resulting application behavior.
3. 3Work the RESTful Application Programming Model end to end — pair a CDS model with a behavior definition, add logic with the Entity Manipulation Language, expose the service, and test it — because the assessment expects a complete, working transaction, not isolated fragments.
4. 4Study Clean Core extensibility as its own block: practise choosing between key-user, developer, and side-by-side options, using released APIs, and adapting custom code, since these judgement calls depend on the business scenario in front of you.
5. 5Rehearse under realistic conditions using the analysis and testing tools — ABAP Test Cockpit, ABAP Unit, profiling, and AI-assisted coding with Joule — so you can produce accurate, verified results efficiently when the hands-on assessment is timed.
