Independent, reasoning-first practice for the SAP® C_ABAPD Back-End Developer – ABAP Cloud certification, built for the 2026 System-Based Assessment format.
Who it's for: ABAP developers and technical consultants — plus experienced programmers moving into modern, cloud-ready SAP development — who want a recognized associate credential proving they can build robust business applications with ABAP, the RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and Clean Core extensibility as a mentored contributor on an implementation project team.

The SAP® C_ABAPD certification confirms that a developer can build reliable business applications on modern, cloud-ready ABAP rather than simply recognizing syntax. Its scope runs from language fundamentals — data objects, control logic, internal tables, and object-oriented design — through database access with ABAP SQL and Core Data Services, into building transactional apps with the RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and out to Clean Core extensibility for SAP S/4HANA Cloud. It also expects working familiarity with Joule, SAP's generative-AI coding assistant, for generating, explaining, and tuning code. Delivered as a System-Based Assessment, it rewards hands-on execution in a live development environment at an entry-level, mentored-contributor depth. Note that the exam is currently offered as a Beta Version.
The blueprint areas to focus your preparation on.
Setting up the development tooling and working with the building blocks of the language — data objects and types, control structures, string and character processing, date/time handling, and simple and complex internal tables — together with software structure, transport logistics, and debugging a program.
Designing effective object-oriented code with local and global classes — instances, methods, encapsulation for consistency, inheritance, interfaces, factory methods — and defining and raising your own exception classes to handle error situations cleanly.
Reading from the database with SELECT statements, applying joins, expressions, built-in functions, sorting and aggregation, and pushing calculation logic down to the database layer to improve performance and reduce data transfer between the application server and the database.
Defining database tables, domains, data elements, structures and table types in the ABAP Dictionary, then modeling relationships and building CDS views with annotations, associations, path expressions, input parameters, and metadata extensions for reusable, enriched data models.
Understanding the RAP architecture and using it to build transactional applications — analyzing a business object, adding behavior and ABAP logic with the Entity Manipulation Language, and improving the resulting user experience for OData-based services.
Applying Clean Core principles when extending SAP S/4HANA Cloud — evaluating key-user, developer, and side-by-side extensibility, working with released APIs and ABAP Cloud reuse services, and adapting or replacing legacy custom code during a system conversion.
Improving quality with the ABAP Test Cockpit and ABAP Unit, profiling runtime and SQL trace analysis, documenting code, and using Joule — SAP's generative-AI developer assistant — to generate unit tests and accelerate coding, explanation, and optimization.
The SAP learning-journey courses this certification draws on.
Learning Basic ABAP Programming
The foundational course — introduces core ABAP on the SAP BTP ABAP environment, covering the development tooling, basic data objects and control logic, local classes, database reads with SELECT and CDS views, business-object updates, and a first look at the RESTful Application Programming Model, with AI-assisted development woven in.
Deepening Your ABAP Programming Knowledge
Builds on the basics with analysis and testing tools — the ABAP Test Cockpit, ABAP Unit, profiling, and SQL trace — plus type handling, character processing, code pushdown in ABAP SQL, internal-table performance, authorization checks, object-oriented design, and exception classes.
Building Data Models with the ABAP Dictionary and ABAP Core Data Services
Focuses on defining and analyzing data models — creating database tables, domains, data elements and global types in the ABAP Dictionary, then building CDS views with annotations, associations, code pushdown, access controls, and metadata extensions.
Practicing Clean Core Extensibility for SAP S/4HANA Cloud
Shows how to extend SAP S/4HANA Cloud in line with Clean Core principles — evaluating when to extend, adapting custom code during conversions, exploring ABAP Cloud and released APIs, and choosing among key-user, developer, and side-by-side extensibility options.
Reading is step one — the 2026 System-Based Assessment rewards hands-on fluency. Train with original, performance-style scenarios and skill drills built for this exam.
